“When the Drape Falls”
Artist’s Statement
Drapery in art is the depiction of any textile in various forms. My artwork has been heavily informed by the illusive drapes represented in Classical European art. The drape has theatrical potentialities and elicits a barrier between the viewer and the painting itself. Images of my brother and I as young children occur throughout the work, with our decorative costumes mirroring the thespian drapes behind and in front of us. The juxtaposition between the billowing, solemnity of the drapes and the innocence of the children is a reflection of the nostalgia that we all face in adulthood. I have painted the drapes over my brother and I to symbolize the “inner child” in every person, that is covered up by the complexities and struggles of modern life.
