Urban Compost Garden System

Artist’s Statement

I aim to design a garden system with an integrated composting compartment that offers individuals a “mini” garden to grow produce while composting discarded food waste. This product pioneers a new approach to urban gardening, enabling people to cultivate fruits and vegetables at home, even in compact spaces. Designed for verandas or balconies with access to sunlight, the system ensures that plants can thrive.

The garden system relies on two main components:

  1. Water: Users need to water the plants regularly, depending on the conditions, to ensure the successful growth of fruits and vegetables.
  1. Food Scraps: Consumers are encouraged to place food scraps in the compost compartment. This reduces food waste in landfills while enriching the soil with nutrients, promoting healthier plant growth.

Having lived in high-rises and apartments for most of my life, I’ve found it challenging to grow and nurture plants in urban environments. This inspired me to create a portable garden system that includes a compost bin, using food waste to enhance plant growth. With the increasing number of high-rise constructions, especially in urban areas like Sydney, this design offers a practical solution for individuals to cultivate plants in limited spaces.
