“Rights of Passage”

Expressive Form: Painting

Nominated for Art Express

Artist’s Statement

Rituals are maps to navigate spirituality.  These physical actions – the kindling of candles, the delivery of prayer, the blessing of children with open palms – embed value in daily life and offer connection to a religious past.

Rights of Passage is a sensitive conversation between traditional and contemporary means of spirituality, examining whether gendered rituals should hold a valuable place in an increasingly colourful and diverse context.

As gender is realised beyond the binary and contemporary culture embodies the ambiguous space between spirituality and secularity, does tradition divide more than it connects? Who has the rights of passage to religious insight?

Inspiration Artists:  Kehinde Wiley, Caroline Walker, Patricia Schappler, Richard Bell and Clare Thackaway
