“Intergenerational Family House“

Artist’s Statement

With the housing crisis in Sydney driving up property prices and rental costs, many young adults find themselves unable to afford their own homes. Median house prices have skyrocketed, particularly in areas like Manly, where prices rose from $1.5M in 2010 to $4.0M in 2023. The rental market is similarly unaffordable, with average rents increasing by 174% since 2009. Additionally, the cost of land has surged while lot sizes have decreased, leaving buyers seeking ways to maximise their living space on smaller plots. 

In response to these challenges, I aim to design a compact, multi-generational home that maximises space on small blocks of land. This home will cater to the growing trend of multi-generational living, which is becoming more common in Australia as young adults remain at home due to the unaffordability of independent living. By studying existing examples of intergenerational homes, I will identify the shortcomings and necessities of these designs to create a viable, long-term housing solution. 

This project seeks to make multi-generational living not only a practical alternative to renting but also a desirable and sustainable choice for families facing the high cost of living in urban areas.
